Psychology Reflection - 803 Words

Over the semester, I have learned many new important concepts within psychology. Psychology is important because it is significant for one to know how individuals operate and the factors that lead to certain behaviors among our peers and within ourselves. Out of all of the topics I have learned, there are three topics that are prominent, which includes confidentiality as it pertains to research, substance dependence, and Mnemonics/study techniques. In our society, conducting research is very common when attempting to learn more information about a certain topic or concept especially within the field of psychology. A very important component to conducting research is confidentiality. Confidentiality can be defined as protecting the†¦show more content†¦For example, a family friend was prescribed oxycodone for a back injury. If for some reason he misses a dose or is unable to fill his prescription, he begins to break out in sweats and is unable to function properly. His ina bility to take the medicine can lead to a variety of withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting, insomnia, sweating, and irritability. Even if He wants to stop taking the medication, he can’t without the proper help because his body has became dependent on the medication in order to function proficiently. This is an example of substance dependence because he is unable to function properly without the medicine. He can only feel normal and not have withdrawal symptoms if he takes the medication. Another concept that I learned over the semester was Mnemonics/study techniques. Mnemonics can be defined as a pattern of letters, numbers, or concepts that can help an individual remember certain ideas. An example of an Mnemonic device is P.E.M.D.A.S. which stands for Please. Excuse. My. Dear. Aunt. Sally. I was fortunate enough to learn PEMDAS in middle school and it has stuck with me until this day. P.E.M.D.A.S. is an example of a Mnemonic device because it is used to teach algebra students the proper way to use complete order of operations. The device used allows the readers to understand the steps used when completing order of operations. The â€Å"P† stands for parentheses. The â€Å"E† stands for exponents.
